RLG has amazing employees in its ranks: from industry influencers, travelers, marathon runners, animal lovers, and community leaders. The Employee Spotlight highlights the talented individuals who work here. Each week, we’ll be featuring an interview here on the blog and on our social accounts.
For this week’s Employee Spotlight, we spoke with Mark Camacho. Here at RLG, Mark is a Engineer on the Civil Team.
I was born and raised in Dallas, TX and graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. I’m currently an Engineer-in-Training but will be looking to take the PE exam in the near future. I love watching/playing sports and support all DFW teams such as the Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars and unfortunately the Rangers… In my free time, I like to work out or hang out with friends and family.
How long have you been at RLG?
It will be 2 years next month.
How did you hear about RLG? Why did you want to work here?
I first heard about RLG from the Career Fair at Texas Tech but never secured anything while I was in school. It wasn’t until a current employee that works here helped me secure a job in the Surveying department, which then helped me transfer to the Civil department after 9 months in the field.
What is the most challenging project you've worked on during your time here so far?
So far it has been my first project that I worked on in Plano where I had to officially begin my first municipal project that consisted of replacing a neighborhood’s water and service lines.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned at RLG?
The most important thing I’ve learned is that help is always at my disposal. With that being said, I’ve learned to speak up more often and never go in too deep into a project without the proper knowledge.
What’s your favorite thing about working in your Department here?
My favorite thing is the freedom to do what I need to do. Being able to work in AutoCAD is very enjoyable to me and seeing what the program is capable of makes this job different every day.
What's the first thing that you do when you start working every day?
I usually put on my headphones and listen to music/videos to help me get going on my work. I can’t work in silence all too well, so it’s a must that I have something playing in the background.
What’s your workspace like? Minimalist? Homey? Neat?
I usually have what I need at arm’s length. I’m neat to a certain extent, but when I’m drowning in work, it could look like a tornado had come through my area.
Do you have a go-to sound or song that you listen to when you need to just start working?
I may not look like it, but my favorite music genre is metalcore. Beware before you start freely searching that sort of music. A Day to Remember is usually the artist I put on when I need to start working.
If RLG announced a last-minute day off for tomorrow, what would you do with your suddenly free day?
I would honestly just enjoy my day off being at the gym and then relaxing at home afterwards playing video games.
What would you do if you weren’t working at RLG?
If I wasn’t working at RLG, I would probably still be working at Home Depot where I worked in college. However, I would still be actively looking for a civil design job to move to.
