RLG has amazing employees in its ranks: from industry influencers, travelers, marathon runners, animal lovers, and community leaders. The Employee Spotlight highlights the talented individuals who work here. Each week, we’ll be featuring an interview here on the blog and on our social accounts.
For this week’s Employee Spotlight, we spoke with Edgar Cecena. Here at RLG, Edgar is a Project Engineer on the Civil Team.
I grew up in Carrollton, Texas, and I’m a Texas Tech Alumni. Usually, I enjoy staying active and like to play several sports from flag football to disc golf, but nothing beats snowboarding. Snowboarding is one of my all-time favorite things to do, I’ve been to a few places like Angel Fire, Ruidoso, Taos, Purgatory, WinterPark, Heavenly, and Northstar. Also, I grew up a Kansas City Chiefs fan, and love attending games at Arrowhead Stadium. In my free time, I like to tackle home projects with my fiancé, Aliceson, watch sports, and play with our two dogs (Knox and Kaya).
How long have you been at RLG?
I have been at RLG since April 2016.
How did you hear about RLG? Why did you want to work here?
I heard about RLG through my friend and coworker, Abdullah. We were college classmates and I ran into him at the Texas Tech job fair in 2016. He told me about how great RLG was, and after an interview, joined the team.
What is the most challenging project you've worked on during your time here so far?
I worked on a charter school with several different challenges. The grading required the construction of several walls, with one wall having a concrete drainage channel built along the top of the wall.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned at RLG?
The most important thing I’ve learned is how important client/consultant relationships are and the role communication plays in keeping those relationships strong.
What’s your favorite thing about working in your Department here?
My favorite thing about working in the civil department is the different challenge each project brings. Each site has its own characteristics that make it different from the one before.
What's the first thing that you do when you start working every day?
Open up AutoCAD and catch up on emails.
What’s your workspace like? Minimalist? Homey? Neat?
Einstein once said “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?”
Do you have a go-to sound or song that you listen to when you need to just start working?
I typically listen to “The Ticket” sports radio.
If RLG announced a last-minute day off for tomorrow, what would you do with your suddenly free day?
I would catch up on some yard work and knock out a couple items on my to-do list.
What would you do if you weren’t working at RLG?
I would probably be in sales.
