At Smithfield Elementary School, RLG had the unique challenge of designing the new campus while the existing campus remained online. Our civil department also designed the phased municipal roadway concurrently with the new Smithfield campus. We achieved a balanced site between phase 1 of the Smithfield and Roadway Project to minimize fill import/export. Our team designed both the storm sewer improvements throughout the site and tied it into the TxDOT storm infrastructure; and the water loop to serve domestic, fire, and hydrant services throughout the site. The water loop crossed the TxDOT thoroughfare. Since the site was located on a large hill, the cut/fill numbers had to be balanced. All aspects of the site grading were designed, modeled, and analyzed to ensure that all the fill required to build the road would be provided by the cut required to build the school.
