RLG has amazing employees in its ranks: from industry influencers, travelers, marathon runners, animal lovers, and community leaders. The Employee Spotlight highlights the talented individuals who work here. Each week, we’ll be featuring an interview here on the blog and on our social accounts.
For this week’s Employee Spotlight, we spoke with Jennifer Jenkins. Here at RLG, Jennifer is our Financial Controller.
A college teacher once told me that I needed to pursue an Accounting degree and my career path was formed. I have now been working in Accounting for over 20 years! I grew up in California and moved to Texas with my husband and two kids almost 9 years ago and we have never looked back. Since moving to Texas we have become real Texans by purchasing land and Texas Longhorns. Never did I think I would find myself on a ranch with 12 Longhorns, 3 Miniature Cattle, 5 Donkeys, 9 dogs and 2 cats BUT I love it! When we are not on the ranch, you will find me cheering on my kids playing volleyball. My daughter just finished her Junior year of HS Varsity and my son plays Club ball that has us travelling all over the US. My husband and I have been married over 21 years and we are looking forward to being empty nesters in less than 4 years, the countdown has begun 😊.
How long have you been at RLG? I joined RLG almost two years ago.
How did you hear about RLG? Why did you want to work here? In CA I worked for a Structural Engineering firm for over 10 years and we used Deltek software, so when I started job searching in TX I actually found RLG by searching for the software as a filter. Once I interviewed, I knew it was the right fit for me.
What is the most challenging project you've worked on during your time here so far? 2020 has been a unique, to say the least, year and researching, applying for and keeping track of the PPP loan has been new and challenging project.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned at RLG? I think that this year RLG has really reminded me that work is not just a place you go but a group of friends and an extended family you have. When your “family” comes together, you can accomplish greats things, even in a Pandemic.
What’s your favorite thing about working in your Department here? I work in the Corporate department and my favorite thing must be my team. We are supportive of each other, encouraging and we know how to have fun!
What's the first thing that you do when you start working every day? Don’t ask me anything until I’ve had my coffee 😊
What’s your workspace like? Minimalist? Homey? Neat? I am very type A and need to have a neat, organized workspace. I like to put personal touches on my walls, so ‘Yes’ the pics of Longhorns are mine.
Do you have a go-to sound or song that you listen to when you need to just start working? Typically, I don’t have music playing at work, unless it gets too quiet, in which case you’ll most likely find me playing Yacht Rock Radio on Pandora.
If RLG announced a last-minute day off for tomorrow, what would you do with your suddenly free day? I would definitely enjoy a day on the Ranch, getting out and visiting with the Longhorns and Donkeys, starting a campfire and enjoying the country.
What would you do if you weren’t working at RLG? I would be an agent for the FBI, investigating embezzlement or white-collar crimes, using math to solve the crimes.
