RLG has amazing employees in its ranks: from industry influencers, travelers, marathon runners, animal lovers, and community leaders. The Employee Spotlight highlights the talented individuals who work here. Each week, we’ll be featuring an interview here on the blog and on our social accounts.
For this week’s Employee Spotlight, we spoke with Jeff Bethke. Here at RLG, Jeff is an Engineer on the Civil Team.
I was born and raised in Oak Cliff in Dallas. I graduated from UTA with my Civil Engineering degree in 2007. I live in Oak Cliff with my wife and kids, Ben (7) and Nora (3). In my free time, I enjoy being a dad, working on my house and yard, and cooking. I am an avid runner, and I am currently training for the Dallas marathon.
How long have you been at RLG? I have been at RLG a little over three years.
How did you hear about RLG? Why did you want to work here? I knew RLG was well respected within the engineering community and I liked the idea of working for a local firm. When I met Phillip Brugger at the UTA career fair I knew it would be a good fit.
What is the most challenging project you've worked on during your time here so far? The Austin Street Center homeless shelter project has been challenging and I have learned a lot from it. The site had several constraints and limited infrastructure with a tight deadline.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned at RLG? I know I always have more to learn and by asking questions, I can benefit from the wealth of knowledge in our department.
What’s your favorite thing about working in your Department here? I’ve made a lot of good friends and teammates; we all work well together to get projects done and have a good time in the process.
What's the first thing that you do when you start working every day? I pour a big cup of coffee and write a list of all of the tasks I need to complete that day.
What’s your workspace like? Minimalist? Homey? Neat? Typically, my desk is neat and clean, but when a deadline is approaching, it is covered in post-it notes, plans, and papers.
Do you have a go-to sound or song that you listen to when you need to just start working? I usually listen to podcasts, but when I need to focus I’ll listen to something more instrumental.
If RLG announced a last-minute day off for tomorrow, what would you do with your suddenly free day? I would go for a long run, have a relaxing lunch, pick up my kids early, and go to the park. After that, would spend the afternoon in the kitchen making a nice dinner for my wife.
What would you do if you weren’t working at RLG? I have always been interested in real estate and like working on my own house. I think it would be fun to try my hand at flipping houses if I wasn’t working at RLG.
