RLG has amazing employees in its ranks: from industry influencers, travelers, marathon runners, animal lovers, and community leaders. The Employee Spotlight highlights the talented individuals who work here. Each week, we’ll be featuring an interview here on the blog and on our social accounts.
For this week’s Employee Spotlight, we spoke with Cesar Ultrera. Here at RLG, Cesar is a CAD Tech on the Survey Team.
I went to Texas Tech University and graduated with a bachelor’s in civil engineering. On my free time I like to spend time with family, listening to music, playing video games, and when able too, I like to go camping. I have been with my girlfriend, Rachel, for about 9 months. I enjoy traveling but not alone. My parents are from Campeche, Mexico and I have 4 siblings, 3 sisters and a brother. I have a huge family, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
How long have you been at RLG? Including internship time, I have been with the company almost 4 years.
How did you hear about RLG? Why did you want to work here? I was working on a project in college and overheard a buddy talking about knowing someone who need interns. He put me in contact with Brian and after 2 summers of internship experience, I was offered a full-time position. I wanted to work here because I enjoyed the people I worked with and the community aspect of the company. I felt very welcomed and enjoyed every minute of my internship.
What is the most challenging project you've worked on during your time here so far? I can't think of the most challenging project but the project I have enjoyed the most will definitely be a parking lot project for Jesuit. I processed the Topographic Survey, then did the preliminary civil engineering design, put together the plat, and then did the construction staking. I pretty much saw the project through from beginning to end.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned at RLG? I have learned the importance of asking questions.
What’s your favorite thing about working in your Department here? We all get along great. There is never a dull moment. It allows for work to be enjoyable.
What's the first thing that you do when you start working every day? When I first arrive, I sit down, pull out my headphones, put on some good music and look at the calendar for what I need to get done.
What’s your workspace like? Minimalist? Homey? Neat? My workspace has a homey feel to it. It can get a bit messy at times, but I try to maintain it organized.
Do you have a go-to sound or song that you listen to when you need to just start working? When I need to really focus and get things done, I usually put on some music with a good beat. That way I don’t focus to much on the words
If RLG announced a last-minute day off for tomorrow, what would you do with your suddenly free day? Spend the day visiting family or just spending time with my girlfriend.
What would you do if you weren’t working at RLG? If I didn’t work for RLG I would probably pursue something that deals with sports or outdoor activities. Despite my physical appearance I love sports and doing things outdoors. I especially love camping and hiking. It helps me destress and enjoy nature.
